![]() Gatorade and Squincher safety drinks Not only is there much more construction and major capital improvement work being done during these prime construction months, but there is also a serious health hazard present with which all of need to contend - high heat exposures. These exposures can affect the general public as well as city work crews and construction work crews. One of the most critical prevention steps we can all take is to take in higher than normal cooling fluids during these times. Water and other electrolyte replacement drinks restore important electrolytes, minerals and fluids lost through perspiration. Drink plenty of water, as much as a liter an hour. Thirst quenchers to replace electrolytes (potassium, calcium and magnesium salts) and essential cooling fluids are available. Dehydration occurs when your body loses too much fluid. This can happen when you stop drinking water or lose large amounts of fluid through diarrhea, vomiting, sweating, or exercise. Not drinking enough fluids can cause muscle cramps. You may feel faint. Usually your body can reabsorb fluid from your blood and other body tissues. But by the time you become severely dehydrated, you no longer have enough fluid in your body to get blood to your organs, and you may go into shock, which is a life-threatening condition. Recognizing signs and symptoms early is very important. Heat exhaustion, if not recognized and treated, can lead to heat stroke which can be serious enough to lead to a fatality. To Prevent Dehydration:
Another prevention step is to take more frequent breaks and rest periods. Find a shaded or cooler spot to just sit and relax for a few extra minutes. Personal cooling devices or protective clothing can also be helpful. Using cool vests, cooled bandanas and wristlets can be effective. This clothing is also available at Code Red Safety.
